Amazon is considering a plan to open up to 3,000 of its cashierless Amazon Go stores by 2021 in cities around the country, according to a Bloomberg report. Among the questions the company is debating is whether they would be convenience stores or focused more narrowly on grab-and-go dinner items, the report said.
UK supermarket chain Waitrose will test compostable bags as an alternative to plastic in the produce departments of a few stores before rolling them out at all locations by next spring. The retailer also plans to phase out single-use plastic carrier bags.

Tesco has unveiled a new discount store format called Jack's, which is expected to compete with ALDI and Lidl in the UK. The first two Jack's stores will open this week and the concept is on track to grow to between 10 and 15 locations next year, the retailer said.
Wegmans is readying its new 120,000-square-foot location in Lancaster, Pa., set to open this weekend. The store will include a Burger Bar restaurant and a made-to-order salad station, as well as grocery delivery via Instacart beginning Sept. 26.
General Mills saw an uptick in retail sales growth during its most recent quarter for products such as Annie's Mac and Cheese, Epic snack bars, Cascadian Farms frozen items and several cereal brands. "Trix posted more than 60% retail sales growth, behind the relaunch of our classic Trix colors, and marshmallow news helped Lucky Charms post 9% retail sales growth on top of last year's 16% growth rate," said CEO Jeffrey Harmening.

Three-quarters of shoppers said they would be more inclined to choose brands that are transparent about ingredients and other issues, a sharp increase from 2016, according to a survey from Label Insight and the Food Marketing Institute. "The new shopper mindset requires brand owners to think about their products well beyond the traditional label and respect a more digitally minded consumer," said Doug Baker, FMI's vice president of industry relations.
